What is Vedic Astrology, plus My Travels in India!
Hi there stargazers, today I’ve got a bit of an exotic topic for you – an insider’s glimpse at my travels in India, studying Vedic Astrology! You might have spotted some of my tropical locations in my horoscope videos and wondered what life is like here, so I thought I’d give you a little info! But first, what on Earth is,
Vedic Astrology?
Vedic Astrology Zodiac Signs. Vedic Astrology or (Jyotish) is India’s system of astrology. It’s been around for thousands of years, and is very similar to the Western Astrology we all know and love, but also very different in a lot of ways! The first thing we notice is that the zodiac is in the shape of a rectangle, as opposed to the circle we’re used to seeing, and there are still 12 zodiac signs, but in Vedic Astrology, they have different names – what’s yours? Another thing to notice is that sometimes your sign will actually change. This is not necessarily right or wrong, it’s just that Vedic Astrology is calculated differently to Western Astrology.
Vedic Astrology is based on something called the Sidereal Zodiac, which is calculated using constellations of “fixed stars" whereas our familiar Western Astrology system takes into consideration the movement of the seasons, like the Spring Equinox – complicated right?! There are lots of other important differences, in particular, the spirituality side of Vedic Astrology is very deep and interesting, with a lot of emphasis on reincarnation, past lives and karma, all really exciting stuff, that we don’t tend to go into as much in Western Astrology!
So, Why did I come to Study Vedic Astrology?
I’ve always loved India as a country, and this is the second time I’ve travelled here. Everyone always talks about India as being very spiritual, and it does have some beautifully wise spiritual traditions and teachings, but more importantly it’s a place that challenges you to grow and to be more patient, open and understanding of life in all its glory – something that a good astrologer needs in spades! But of course, aside from my desire to visit India again, I wanted to come and study Vedic Astrology, so that I could widen my knowledge of astrology as a whole. In my own astrology practice, I read using decans, which are not used so much in modern Western Astrology but are very important in Vedic Astrology (called Nakshtra rather than decans), and were popular in ancient Egypt, Arabic and Babylonian astrology and other older forms of stargazing. A system of decans basically splits the 12 signs into 36 to give a more in-depth reading.
What’s it like to Study in India?
Very hot! Haha well that is the first thing I would say! I’m currently in Goa, which is in South India. Sometimes the temperatures can reach 38° which doesn’t help with focusing, and my teacher is quite strict, and expects me to learn some very complicated stuff! Luckily, I’ve had plenty of training in Western Astrology, so I could skip some of the more tedious bits like calculating charts (a very mathematical task!) There aren’t really proper astrology schools out here, so it is just a case of finding an astrologer who will teach you, and it’s really important to make sure you like your teacher. I’ve been working with mine for a couple of months now, he’s very serious but very knowledgeable, but I feel like I’m ready to move on now. Astrology is such a complicated system, all built from symbols and intuitions, so I feel it’s important to learn from many different teachers, so you can start to find your own systems. Just like travel itself, there are so many new experiences to add to astrology, and I feel the two go hand in hand perfectly. I’m not only learning about Vedic Astrology, but about travel, life, people, and myself! Come join me on my adventures with my weekly horoscopes and regular blog posts!
So, what do you think about my adventures in India? Do you like my tattoos?
