Mother’s Day Celebrations Worldwide

love you mom

Sunday the 11th of March 2018 is Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day. In the UK, this annual celebration of motherhood and the maternal bond usually involves giving Mum a card, a gift and a bunch of flowers to let her know that you care. Other maternal figures like grandmothers, stepmothers and mothers-in-law can also be honoured on this special day.

How Did The Celebration Of Mothering Sunday Begin?

Now known as Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day, the tradition of honouring motherhood began in England around the 1600s, and was originally called ‘Refreshment Sunday’ or ‘Mid-Lent Sunday‘. The tradition was started as a way of reuniting the young children, who were sent to work as domestic servants and apprentices, with their mothers once a year. The date of the annual visit home was the 3rd Sunday during the fasting period of Lent. After paying a visit to church, the children would gather flowers from roadside bushes and verges and present these blooms to their mothers. Young girls baked a rich almond Simnel Cake, which is still eaten today.

Today, Mother’s Day is a day when children make the effort to spoil their mums. Flower sales usually record a major rise in profits at this time of the year. The bestselling Mothering Sunday flowers are roses, carnations and chrysanthemums.

International Mother’s Day

Mothers Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, although not on the same day or time of the year.

Australia

In Australia, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. There is a tradition of wearing a carnation, which originated in the USA – a white carnation means that you are honouring a mother in spirit, whilst a coloured carnation symbolises that your mum is alive. Mothers receive flowers and gifts, and may also enjoy breakfast in bed.

  •

    Canada

In Canada, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. Caring children honour their mums, grandmothers and other women who are like their mothers. Mothers are taken out for lunch or dinner and are generally treated like a queen.

  • France

French folks celebrate Maman’s special day on the last Sunday in the month of May. The family will gather for a big family lunch, and mothers receive gifts and a bouquet of flowers.

  •

    India

Mother’s Day is a fairly new tradition in India. It is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. Mothering Sunday has been embraced by the Indian people, and now forms part of their cultural festival timetable.

    Mexico

Mother’s Day in Mexico is celebrated on May 10th in a colourful fashion. Churches in Mexico organise a special mass that features an orchestra. All local mothers receive tasty ‘tamales’ and ‘atole’ snacks.

  •

    New Zealand

The second Sunday in May is the day when people in New Zealand honour mothers. The event is a big deal, and is celebrated in a manner that is inspired by Mother’s Day in the USA. Flowers, gifts and treats, and breakfast in bed is on the agenda.

  • South Africa

The people of South Africa celebrate Mother’s Day by honouring the importance of mothers in their lives and giving thanks. Mother’s Day is held on the second Sunday in May. As in the USA and Australia, carnations are worn.

  •

    Spain

In Spain, Mother’s Day is celebrated on December 8th. This extravagant religious festival also honours the Virgin Mary.

  •

    USA

In the USA Mother’s Day is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm. It is due to the hard work of Ms Anna Jarvis that Mother’s Day is actually celebrated as a national holiday. On the second Sunday in May, American people honour the Mother of Mothers Day, their mothers and other mother figures in their lives. Carnations are worn, flowers and gifts are presented and children express their love for their mother in personal ways.

Easter and Astrology Around the World

Easter is right around the corner, and to celebrate, we’re diving deep into the astrological significance of this springtime festival. Despite the many differing traditions around the world, Easter has its roots in a few main symbols, most of which, you’ll be pleased to hear, are astrological!

Easter Eggs and Bunnies

It’s no surprise that Easter is a fertility festival, what with all the egg symbolism! In fact, the egg symbol has become so entrenched in Easter traditions that in the South of France, there’s a town that makes a giant, 4,500-egg Easter omelette in the town square which feeds up to 1,000 people!

In England, we have the Easter Bunny, who delivers chocolate eggs to children – an odd tradition when you first think about it! But the practice makes sense when taken in the context of fertility, which to pagan people in ancient Britain, was most energetically represented by the rabbits’ breeding patterns, which were most frantic around the pagan festival of Eostre, marking the start of spring.

Spring Equinox

In the Northern hemisphere, Easter is a most decidedly astrological festival due to it being the celebration of the Spring Equinox.

The Spring Equinox, also known as the Vernal Equinox, is the time when the days are of equal length to the nights. This is due to the sun’s movement across the celestial equator, giving us a fuller view of its rays. A much welcome occurrence after the long, dark days of winter!

Many cultures have celebrated the solstices (shortest and longest days of the year) and the equinoxes (equal day and night) for thousands of years, as this lengthening of the days meant that people could begin to grow and harvest their crops with the extra power of the sun. Many ancient calendars began around this time, which leads us to our next point!

Aries and New Beginnings

Aries is the first sign on the zodiac. In the Northern Hemisphere (the West) it is the start of the light season and so is representative of new beginnings, which is why Aries are often said to be very good at starting projects (and sometimes not as good at following through!).

In the Greek island of Corfu, people throw ceramic pots out of windows to symbolise throwing out the old and bringing in the new with the season of spring. Spring cleaning is another similar concept, where Westerners clean their houses to rid the old, stale energy that has built up over winter, to create space for new things to come in.

Holi Festival in India and Nepal

In India (where I am right now!), Holi Festival is celebrated at the beginning of March to mark the end of winter and the beginning of spring. Known as the ‘Festival of Colours’, Holi is usually celebrated on the full moon before the spring equinox and involves people throwing coloured paint and water to build and repair relationships, connect and play in celebration of light over dark, good over evil.

Bonfires and Burning

In astrology, the element of fire is a cleansing and transformative energy, which is why the zodiac sign of Aries is a fire sign for springtime. Growth and creation is the main event, with plants budding and flowers blooming. This is the nature of fire.

In Western Finland, Easter Sunday is a day for burning bonfires, following the ancient Nordic belief that the flames will ward off evil and bring in good.

In the Vatican, the Pope lights burning torches on a huge cross on Good Friday to celebrate the life, death, and rebirth of Jesus Christ, who funnily enough, was the son of God and rose to life again around the same time as the Winter Solstice – the seasonal return of the sun (or son?).

Fire is an integral part of springtime, and represents life in motion, and despite fire’s potential to destroy, it also provides light, security from wild animals and heat for survival. It is a lifeforce that is represented throughout many cultures and marks a great time to start new things, get rid of old ways, and embark on a new period of growth for a new year ahead.

The world is a bit of a chaotic place at the moment. In the US, The President is getting into troll wars on Twitter and being accused of sexual harassment. The UK’s not much better, as it speeds blindly towards Brexit. Then there’s the world’s relations with Russia and North Korea, which can be described as perilous at best. So what does the next year hold for these big players and their leaders?

What’s Written in the Stars for 2018?

Throughout the previous 18 months we’ve had a very chaotic T-Square pattern formed between Jupiter, Uranus and Pluto. This wreaked havoc with various world events, including Trump’s election victory and the UK’s Brexit vote. It’s also escalated nuclear tensions between the US, South and North Korea. On top of this, the White House has been in limbo with allegations of sexual harassment and tax fraud that have dogged The President since his victory.

Jupiter moved into Libra last year. This encouraged the world to focus on justice and balance. The addition of revolutionary Uranus in Aries brings about a fiery and immediate push for change, and Pluto in Capricorn directs our attention to those who hold all the power. Does this sound familiar?

What we’ve been seeing is a struggle of the public wanting reform, victims exposing those who misuse their positions of power and a very chaotic reshuffling in the very structure of our society. This is big stuff!

Ellie Rose’s 2018 Predictions…

Trump

President Trump

Donald Trump is heavily influenced by Pluto in his “First House”.  This means his very identity is coloured with some of the traits of Scorpio – power-hungry, secretive and transformative.
This is probably why he’s come under the spotlight so often in 2017. However, now that Jupiter has broken the angsty T-Square, there’s a high chance that Trump will step out of the spotlight (as much as the President can do anyway).

Now that Jupiter is in Scorpio, we have seen the backlash from victims of systemic sexual abuse. I predict that now the lid has been blown off, the victims and public will be able to implement change. Trump will be wise to go along with this change and keep his hands to himself while it’s happening!

Trump vs Putin

My Predictions on President Trump, Russia and the President Putin Issue

We had all sorts of scandals reported about Trump’s connection to Russia. Allegations that the Russians influenced the election vote and hacked Hillary Clinton’s emails are still yet to be properly investigated.

Looking at both Putin and Trump’s charts, both are highly influenced by Pluto and Scorpio. This will mean that these issues are likely to carry on long into 2018. However, now that the tension of the planets has relaxed, I find it unlikely that we will see the impeachment of Trump. I also predict we won’t see any deeper revelations come from the ongoing investigations. In any instance, whatever does come out of the investigation, both Trump and Putin will be able to ride out the storm in their normal slippery manner.

However, although these ongoing investigations may run their course, there is always the prospect that newer or more allegations could arise.

Without the drive for change and justice from Uranus and Jupiter in Libra, there is only Pluto – who is very good at hiding stuff and protecting positions of power. So this may prove very advantages to both President Trump and Putin.

Putin

President Putin

As stated when looking at Trump’s chart, Putin should be able to ride out whatever findings come out of the Russian/Trump plot to discredit Hillary Clinton. That’s not me saying there won’t be some very embarrassing findings by the way. But, with the assistance of Pluto – who is good at hiding stuff and protecting positions of power – both Trump and Putin should be able to sweep it under the carpet and ride it out.

Putin will experience several Uranus/Pluto aspects around the time of the World Cup in June, which is to be held in Russia. Reports are emerging about secret police, armed security and long jail sentences for ticket touts, foreign fans caught up in violence and people inciting unrest.  This may lead to some friction with other foreign governments and world leaders. I still predict Putin will also be able to ride out this diplomatic tension in his usual dismissive and contemptuous style.

With Trump experiencing Mars/Pluto aspects around then too, it looks like there’s going to be fireworks at the World Cup – possibly of a military kind. Don’t panic though, it could all just be threats again!

theresa may

Theresa May

There’s all this noise about Brexit, yet nothing is really happening. Theresa May remains in a tricky situation. The latest news is that British MPs will vote on whether certain secret information should be released to the public. With this in mind it seems that 2018 will be a big year for decisions.

Theresa May’s natal chart says a lot about her position within parliament. Her natal Sun has no aspects to any of the traditional planets, it floats alone. This could explain her lack of support from fellow MPs. It might also have played a hand ego-driven decisions, such as seeking expensive support from the DUP which kept the Conservative’s place in power, but left Northern Ireland worryingly poised. This will only further her alienation within government and with the public.

Mrs May will have Chiron opposing her Midheaven, indicating that she may experience some damage to her career in the first few months of 2018. With proposed High Court challenges to Brexit, it will be a bumpy ride for Theresa May and the outcome doesn’t look great. However, until we have more defined dates for these political events, it’s hard to predict the outcome at this time. Whichever way you look at it though, I predict Theresa May is in for one hell of a bumpy ride.

north korea

Kim Jong Un

Finally, we have the unpredictability of North Korea, another product of the 2017 Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter T-Square.
In September 2017, North Korea tested their nuclear weapons, throwing the world into a panic and causing President Trump to take to Twitter with misguided threats. Kim Jong-Un had Uranus (still in its chaotic T-Square) opposing his Mars – the planet of War! Pluto was also opposing his Ascendant, as well as Chiron squaring his Jupiter, meaning that this was a personal war for him. It was also one that affected his identity and possibly brought up angst over his global outcast status. He was showing his hand in order to boost his ego.

In April and December of 2018, this same Uranus and Mars aspect will happen again for the President of North Korea. Therefore, it’s possible we will see some more conflict around this time.

My Closing Thoughts…

So, the world seems to have gone a little crazy! But with 2017’s major Pluto, Uranus and Jupiter aspect breaking up finally, it’s possible that things will start to flow better. When big changes are made, and secrets uncovered, it takes a while to regain the status quo. Iit seems though that 2018 is the year for bringing about balance and justice again, albeit with a few hiccups along the way!
